John mentally clung to the relaxed, sated joy that tingled through his body. How long had it been since he’d last felt this relaxed? This complete? Well, maybe not entirely. A part of him itched to reach over and draw Oz closer so that they were completely wrapped in each other—the same way he had when they’d slept together years ago. Sure, it had started out as just some fun. Just sex. But in those last weeks, they’d done more hanging out than fucking. Sleeping over, wrapped up in each other, had become the norm. He had been sure that Oz had felt something, that there was something more going on between them than sex.

But where did that leave them now?

Turning his head, he brushed his lips against Oz’s shoulder. “I almost forgot how good we are together.”

“So fucking good,” Oz murmured, sounding as if he was starting to drift off to sleep.

“You know that it doesn’t have to end when you leave Denver,” John tentatively added.

And just like that Oz was sitting up and throwing his legs over the edge of the bed. John wanted to kick himself. This had not been his goal at all. He wanted to keep Oz in his bed, not just for that night but for the foreseeable future.

“Yes, it does,” Oz said wearily. He sat with his forearms resting on his knees and his long hair hanging down in a curtain around his face. “I can’t do more.”

John rolled onto his side, fighting the urge to run his hand down Oz’s spine. “Why?” But Oz didn’t say anything and John frowned. “Why didn’t you tell me about the baby when you found out?”

Oz quickly turned around and looked at John like he’d lost his mind. “We were just screwing around. No complications. ‘Just some fun.’ Remember? How was I supposed to tell you that my life was about to get really fucking complicated?”

“Yeah, we were fucking, but I also thought over that time we became friends. You couldn’t tell your friend that shit was getting messy in your life?”

“Maybe I didn’t want to watch you run for the door.”

John shoved into a sitting position, leaning back against the headboard. “What the—”

“Don’t. You were always quick to point out that there was no pressure, no complications. Just some fun. You didn’t want messy.”

“It wasn’t a matter of me not wanting messy,” John said, giving up on controlling his temper. “I knew that I was a goddamn experiment for you. Every time we were together, we were conquering some first for you. And yeah, I loved being your first for all of it, but I felt like I had to keep it light. I was afraid that if I was serious, if it suddenly became too real for you, you’d run for the door.”

Oz turned back to face away and John silently cursed himself. He should have kept his damn mouth shut because before Oz turned away, he looked like John had just dropped a massive bomb on him.
